How to Balance Your Chakras for Optimal Health and Well-Being

When our seven main chakras are open and balanced, energy can flow freely through our bodies and minds. This allows us to experience optimal health and well-being. When any of these energy centers become blocked, it leads to stagnation and can contribute to a variety of physical and spiritual ailments. Chakra balancing is the process of restoring an even flow of energy through the chakra system.

Rather than simply, and sometimes abruptly, unlocking the chakras (which can cause Kundalini syndrome), it's best to focus on finding a balanced energy flow. This can be done through a variety of different ways. Some techniques may be more effective for one than the other. Balancing the flow of energy through the chakras ensures that the entire system works in harmony.

The root chakra, located at the base of the spine, is associated with feelings of security, safety, and stability. If you find yourself disconnected from the physical experience of your root chakra, you can reconnect with the earth by spending time in nature. This chakra dictates how you digest experiences, how you feel about the things that happen in your life, and your general attitude towards your life. The Sacral Chakra, or Svadhisthana Chakra, is located in the sacrum, the bone plate above the coccyx that connects to the lumbar vertebrae.

To balance this chakra, it's helpful to first find out if you're hyperactive or underactive. Even taking a bath or shower can help balance the chakra and, at the same time, relax the body. The throat chakra, located at the base of the throat, is associated with communication and expression. Balancing this chakra is as easy as “being impeccable with your word” (The 4 Agreements of Don Miguel Ruiz).

This way, you use the power of your word to tell truth and love. When you speak, speak with integrity. Don't speak against yourself or others and say ONLY what you really want to say. You will feel sincere and honest but firm, free to articulate your thoughts, feelings and ideas, if this chakra is optimally balanced. The third eye chakra, located between your eyebrows, is associated with intuition and insight.

If you feel creatively blocked, as if your ability to play and create is stifled, then your svadistahana chakra may be blocked. You will feel joy, compassion, love, gratitude and peace if this chakra is optimally balanced. Indian healers can also unlock your chakras, but it's a bit difficult to find real healers you can trust. A sound bath is another great way to balance your chakras. The treatment includes singing crystal bowls and herbal aromatherapy which uses massage techniques that focus on different areas of the body, each of which corresponds to a specific chakra.

The therapist will then move toward the front of the body, focusing on the chest, neck, shoulders, face and head to further relax and open up the flow of energy through the upper chakras.Yoga poses that stimulate the thyroid gland or stretch the neck muscles are ideal for balancing the throat chakra. The human body system thrives when the chakras and nadis are open and the prana, or life force, is allowed to move throughout the system with ease.
