Unblocking Your Chakras: How to Realign Your Energy Centers

We all experience stress and anxiety in our lives, and it can have a direct influence on our body, creating tension within the body's tissues and restricting the flow of Qi or Prana. This can lead to one or more chakras becoming blocked or out of balance. A blocked chakra means that energy is stuck or hindered, similar to a blocked artery. To ensure energy and information can flow, the channels through which they flow must be open.

Chakras can become blocked or unbalanced when there is too much activity in that area or there is not enough. A low-energy chakra means that it will be difficult for you to express the qualities of that particular chakra, while a hyperactive chakra will dominate your other systems. The Navel Chakra resides in the Solar Plexus and is associated with a sense of trust. This chakra can be blocked if you feel embarrassed, leading to problems related to willpower and self-esteem.

If you tend to feel shy and unable to express your opinion in a meeting, it is likely your belly button chakra that is blocked. The Root Chakra is located at the base of the spine and is connected to our sense of security and safety. It can become blocked due to lies you may have told, not only to others, but also to yourself, to avoid truths that you would rather not face. To heal the root chakra, include more root vegetables such as beets, carrots, radishes, garlic, onions and parsnips in your diet.

The Throat Chakra is connected to the throat and vocal cords and can cause thyroid problems or a recurring sore throat when blocked. Algae, ginseng and wheatgrass are useful foods for realigning this chakra, as well as relaxing teas to drink. Swallowing gently at this point can help you get an idea of how the throat chakra is aligned. The Heart Chakra is located in the center of the chest and is associated with love and empathy.

When this chakra is blocked, you may have difficulty expressing or receiving love, feeling empathy or feeling lost or empty inside. The Solar Plexus Chakra is located in the abdomen and is associated with personal power and self-confidence. To heal this chakra, look for yellow foods such as bananas, pineapples and yellow peppers. Make small adjustments as needed to lengthen and balance the spine - remember that all chakras are in the spine - if you are out of alignment your back may feel misaligned. The Crown Chakra is located at the top of the head and is associated with spiritual connection.

Unlike the other chakras, this one is often only fully opened through specific yoga or meditation exercises, or at certain times - not a skill set you can draw on at any given time. Now that you know how to recognize when one or more of your chakras are blocked, along with some simple solutions to realign them, you can start working towards well-being by starting at the root and working your way up to the crown - one chakra at a time.
